The Oakland Raiders informed General Manager Reggie McKenzie, he has been relieved of his duties as of Monday, December 10th.
The move comes in the midst of a 3-10 season and directly after Oakland upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final minutes. The Raiders' season is lost and the John Gruden era has been tumultuous thus far.
Since Gruden took over as head coach, the Raiders have traded a former defensive player of the year in Khalil Mack and now pro bowl level receiver Amari Cooper. The trades were Gruden's decisions, not McKenzie's.
When Gruden was hired, he was expected to gather his team and his players. Raiders' owner Mark Davis envisioned Gruden and McKenzie working alongside each other as he explains in an interview with NBCsports.com.
“Jon’s the head coach and he’s going to be here a while, so it’s important that he gets the players he wants and builds a team he wants to build,” Davis said. “Reggie is there with his staff to find the players, and also to keep the (salary) cap and everything else in order.”
McKenzie took over as general manager in 2012 and besides three coaching changes and six losing seasons, has proven to be a capable general manager. McKenzie is responsible for drafting franchise quarterback Derek Carr, Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper. McKenzie signed a retired Marshawn Lynch and stole Michael Crabtree from San Francisco.
McKenzie made his fair share of mistakes and bad decisions but he struck gold three times in the draft, selecting bonafide stars. McKenzie is responsible for bringing former head coach Jack Del Rio to Oakland and constructed a Raiders' roster that went 12-4, ultimately losing because of injury.
Firing McKenzie seems like another way for Gruden to have complete control over the Oakland Raiders' front office. At least this time, if Gruden fails, the team and fans will have a clear target of blame.
