Mike McCarthy's best fit: New York Jets

The Packers' firing of Mike McCarthy allowed one of the NFL's best coaches to hit the open market. A small number of head coaching jobs will be available but one opportunity sticks out above the rest.

The New York Jets currently are the last place team in the AFC East and have been throttled by opposing teams all year. Head coach Todd Bowles has struggled since being hired in 2015, composing a 23-37 record while on his way to his third consecutive losing season.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, New York Jets coach Todd Bowles is expected to be fired following the 2018 season, with general manager Mike Maccagnan likely to help the team find a new head coach.

The Jets are in the midst of an eight-year playoff drought and will finish 2018 as one of the worst statistical teams in the NFL.

Bright spots for the Jets are rookie quarterback Sam Darnold and star safety Jamal Adams.

Before Darnold was drafted, Bob McGinn compared the young quarterback to a former McCarthy coached Hall of Fame players, Brett Favre.

"His arm’s not like (Brett) Favre’s but he has a little bit of that in him,”

To say McCarthy and Favre's relationship was tremendous would be an understatement. McCarthy coached Favre for two seasons, 2006-'07, including a 13-3 season and an NFC Championship appearance.

In the midst of a disappointing career that would lead to McCarthy's firing, Favre stood by his former coach.

"I think Mike [McCarthy] is an excellent coach," Favre said. "They have to win and in a hurry or something may happen there. I mean, Aaron [Rodgers] has been playing outstanding and keeping them in games. Their defense is really, at times, looking really good, opportunistic, aggressive."

Coaching a player like Favre must be appealing to McCarthy, especially how bitter the ending in Green Bay was. The relationship between McCarthy and current Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been long regarded as stale.

A chance to move away from a "borderline uncoachable" player, according to FS1's Colin Cowherd, and lead the "next Brett Favre" would be a dream for McCarthy.

If offered the head coaching job for the New York Jets, McCarthy would face an immense amount of pressure to restore the Jets to an annual playoff contender. McCarthy has proven he can do so in Green Bay as he holds the franchises' second-highest win percentage and most playoff appearances.

New York is McCarthy's chance to restart and pairing him with Darnold could be exactly what the duo needs to build the first Jets dynasty.

The New York Jets odds to land Mike McCarthy currently stand at +500, according to 247sports.com.
