Mogul and rap star Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, and his company Roc Nation have signed a deal with the NFL to become a live music entertainment strategist.
Roc Nation will have control over the entertainment and outside live events, in this case, they can choose who they want to perform at the Superbowl and other events the NFL is apart of.
While some praised the agreement, the deal has raised questions as to if the Jay-Z could help Colin Kaepernick return to the NFL?
Kaepernick has been out of the league since the 2016 season, but during his final season, Kaepernick became the face of social activism in the NFL by kneeling during the National Anthem to bring awareness to social injustice and police brutality in the black community.
Other players followed suit, which led to a national outcry by Americans and fans who said it was disrespectful to the flag.
Since then, he has not been able to make an NFL roster with many in the league believing that NFL owners and teams have blackballed Kaepernick due his protesting.
Now with the deal between Roc Nation and the NFL, certain players and fans think Jay-Z may help Kaepernick get back into the NFL.
Jay-Z, who has done his fair share of social activism, for example helping free Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill from jail, may not have the chance to do the same for Kaepernick.
Simply, the NFL is a multibillion-dollar business, and teams do not want to lose money. If Kaepernick was signed by a team, he would likely be asked to stop kneeling-something Kaepernick has not publicly stated he would do. Even if Kaepernick would agree to end his anthem protest, a national outcry would still proceed.
Kaepernick's football star may have faded following a tremendous few years in San Francisco, which included two NFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury and average-at-best play, during his final two years made it easy for teams to erase any thought of signing Kaepernick.
Still better than most backups, fans and current players advocated for Kaepernick to get another shot. While his play not have been the biggest detractor, the massive amounts of media attention and $11 million asking price, have made owners and teams hesitant to sign the 31-year old quarterback.
In regards to advocating for Kaepernick's return to the NFL, Jay-Z said: “I'm not a businessman, I'm a business man."
A deal based strictly on business, Jay-Z still has the chance to become the first African American Owner in NFL history. An unprecedented win for the black community. What a better way to establish power in a league predominantly played by African Americans than to start at the top.
