Aaron Rodgers is in Dangerous Territory

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

The Green Bay Packers troubling season became much worse after a loss to the 2-9 Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field. The defeat marked the third consecutive loss for Green Bay and the end of the Mike McCarthy era.

A 13-year stretch including 10 winning seasons and nine playoff appearances is over and Green Bay is searching for a new head coach for the 16th time in the teams 98 year history. Longevity is over and in the new offensive driven NFL, Green Bay made the right move.

McCarthy came from an era of smash-mouth, west coast football. McCarthy sat under Jim Haslet and was partially responsible for the 49ers passing on Aaron Rodgers when he was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco.

McCarthy left for Green Bay to coach Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, not Aaron Rodgers. The duo of McCarthy and Rodgers, despite many disagreements, had a monumental amount of success. The Packers won six division titles and did what took Favre five years to do in just three-win a Super Bowl.

Eight years removed from winning the Lombardi Trophy, Green Bay and more importantly Aaron Rodgers find themselves in dangerous territory.

Two years ago, ESPN's Max Kellerman compared Aaron Rodgers to NBA superstar Lebron James in regard to their play. An accurate comparison but now Rodgers can be compared to James in another way.

Rodgers will now have an ear in on meetings and be considered in who Green Bay's next coach will be. In other words, if Green Bay's next coach fails, Rodgers will be at fault. Rodgers, like James, is in the driver's seat of his respective franchise.

Rodgers already has his detractors and now has the biggest decision of his career ahead of him. Rodgers and the Packers' brass must decide who can coach Rodgers and the number 13th ranked defense to a championship. A task easier said than done.

Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler sums up the relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers bluntly.

If the toxic relationship is any indication of how Rodgers treats those he does not agree with or respect, the best case scenario is for Green Bay to a hire a mouthpiece style of head coach-much in the vain of Tyrone Lue for Lebron James.

Rodgers seems to want a coach who lets him play freely and won't question his on-field decisions. Rodgers now has the chance to hire the coach he wants. A coach that will follow his rules and answers to his demands but if Rodgers fails, his reputation is tarnished.

Already considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Rodgers is on the brink of reputation deterioration.
