UFC249 on as scheduled: What does this mean for other leagues?

During these unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic, some sports fans are getting excited for the return of their favorites sports teams and leagues. Fortunately for MMA fans, they won’t have to wait much longer as the UFC is set for its next pay per view, UFC249, on Saturday, May 9.

UFC249 will have a stacked main card with some of the best fighters in the world and it will be headlined with two championship fights, including Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje for the Interim Lightweight championship.

With this being the first UFC event since March 14, this could be the most-watched PPV in UFC history. This is also a good sign for other leagues like the NBA, NHL, and MLB.

UFC249 will be live in Florida, which is the same state where the WWE is considered an essential business. Therefore, if the UFC and WWE can have events in Florida, why not other major sports leagues?

This could be especially good for Major League Baseball considering they host spring training games throughout Florida. While MLB is exploring options on how to start the 2020 season, the NBA and NHL should consider doing the same thing.

Even though hot and sunny Florida may not be an ideal place for ice hockey, 30 colleges have an ice hockey team including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, and Miami Hurricanes, which means every NHL team can have their own temporary home at Florida except for the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers.

As for the NBA, it can do the same thing as pretty much every college in Florida has a basketball court, which would be great places to host games especially in the NCAA Division One arenas. Another possibility for the NBA is to host more than one game at the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic arenas.

In the UFC, there is anything but social distancing in the octagon. Therefore, if two professional athletes are willing to put on a show during a pandemic, why not have two teams battle each other on the court, on the ice, or the baseball diamond?

In other words, the entire sports world could be in Florida during the coronavirus pandemic if other leagues consider it.
