The Philadelphia Phillies have commanded the market for free agent Bryce Harper the majority of the offseason and after principal owner John Middleton's second visit to Las Vegas n six weeks, the two seem to be nearing a record-breaking deal.
According to Bleacher Report's Adam Lefkoe, a deal has been agreed upon between Bryce Harper and the Phillies with a press conference scheduled for later this week. The deal is said to be close to 10-years, $330 million.
Middleton's first visit came in January, accompanied by Phillies' general manager Matt Klentak, manager Gabe Kapler, who Harper was impressed with, and other members of the front office. Middleton landed in Las Vegas alone this time, as reported by Philly.com, and was expected to depart on Saturday but stayed an extra few days as negotiations continued.
While Harper has not officially signed on the dotted line, the Phillies stated their confidence in landing the former MVP over the weekend which still remains with Middleton leaving with no deal.
Along with Philadelphia, the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres remain in contact with Harper. San Francisco recently upped their offer and publicly stated their willingness to extend a long-term deal to Harper.
If Harper and the Phillies do agree to the rumored deal, Harper would surpass Manny Machado, who signed last week, as the recipient of largest free agent contract in Major League Baseball history. The deal would also place Harper above Yankees' slugger Giancarlo Stanton's $325 million deal for the largest overall contract in baseball history.
Harper would be the final acquisition to a Phillies' roster that has already added former-MVP Andrew McCutchen and two former all stars in Jean Segura and JT Realmuto via trade.
