Wednesday afternoon brought excitement to the city of brotherly love as former-MVP Bryce Harper signed his name on the dotted line to become the newest member of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The deal first reported by MLB Network's Jon Heyman is the largest free-agent contract in Major League Baseball history totaling $330 million over 13 years, including a $20 million signing bonus. Harper also insisted on having a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs, meaning he is locked into the contract till 2032.
Matching Yankees' slugger Giancarlo Stanton's contract in length and surpassing him in total money, Harper's contract is now the foundation for future agents.
A week where the Giants willingly offered Harper a 10-year deal and the Dodgers emerged as the new favorite-the Phillies desperately offered Harper their max deal.
A win for both sides, the Phillies' odds to win the World Series skyrocketed all the way to sixth best in baseball. Starting at 14-1 prior to the signing, the Phillies now sit with 10-1 odds to become World Series champions, according to Caesars.
Just now entering his age 26 season, Harper now has till the age of 39 to do what he has failed to do in the past seven years as a member of the Washington Nationals-win a championship.
Speaking of his former team, Harper and the Phillies will make their visit to Nationals Park on April 2-3 for a two-game series.
Now the richest man in Major League Baseball history, Bryce Harper has the remainder of his baseball career set and only his legacy to build upon.
Harper finished the 2018 season with a .249 batting average, 34 home runs, 100 rbi' and 130 walks marking a career high.
