Best Landing Spots for Kevin Durant

Updated: May 25, 2019

We are currently a little over a month away from Kevin Durant hitting free agency, meaning, teams will be vying at a chance to sign the best player in the world. Among the teams in the running for Durant are the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and the rising Los Angeles Clippers.

Durant’s business manager recently said the star was “100% undecided” about where he will end up this summer. Each team offers strong positives to Durant, but all come with their disadvantages.

The Case For the Warriors:

Kevin Durant loves winning, and there is not a team that can offer him more of that than the Warriors. He has won two championships in his two years in Golden State (possibly three by the end of the season) and earned Finals MVP honors in both of those years.

Just when the Warriors were starting to look poised to make another run, he fell injured with a calf strain. The Dubs then soared in a sweep of the Blazers, making the media question whether Durant was needed in The Bay or not. Regardless, Durant can keep the promise of championships and finally earn the long-term max contract he deserves in Golden State.

For the Warriors, Durant would be able to continue playing for an organization with great management, a great coaching staff, and the best roster in the league.

The Case For the Knicks:

Durant has accomplished what he needed to with the Warriors. He has won championships, silenced haters, and solidified his spot as the top player in the league. So why would he leave?

Durant still hears the talk of him not being able to win a championship that is “his team." No matter how many accomplishments he racks up, the Warriors will always be Steph Curry’s team. Durant will never be seen as the most important piece of the Warriors' dynasty.

If Durant were to leave and win a championship for a dysfunctional team like the Knicks, he would solidify his spot as a top 10 player of all time. The Knicks would have the opportunity to pair Durant with All-Star Kyrie Irving as well as a possible third star like Anthony Davis or the third pick of the draft. This seems like a team that could make a run deep in the playoffs, but with rising speculation of Irving and Durant heading to Los Angeles, the odds are stacking up against the Knicks.

New York already missed out on Zion Williamson, and it would not be a surprise to see them fumble a chance at Kevin Durant.

The Case For the Clippers:

As speculation rose for New York, Kendrick Perkins dropped a bombshell in an interview with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports 1.

“Everybody keeps screaming New York, but do not be surprised if KD signs and goes to play for Doc [Rivers], … I don't even have to help recruit him. He likes the organization, he likes Doc Rivers, he loves Doc Rivers. But me and KD don't talk about [free agency], he just happened to throw that out there."

The Clippers played a tough series against the Warriors in round one of the playoffs, forcing six games while pestering the Warriors star with tough defense and tenacity. It took a 50 point effort by Durant to finally put them away. The Clippers were not only playing great basketball but having fun doing it. The whole basketball world took notice and enjoyed watching the entire series.

With all the heat Durant gets in the Bay Area, Durant could use an environment where he could ball without all the media attention. They have all the pieces to build a contender around Durant and could even afford to add another star next to him. Do not be surprised if this is where Durant ends up this summer.
